This is article #9 in my 16 part series summarising Tauranga City Council strategy documents.
Here is my summary of the Tauranga City Council Sport and Active Living Strategy 2012 (30 pages. 673Kb .pdf).
Just the following 6 items caught my eye in this document:
- Stakeboarding is considered an extreme sport!
- Water Sprint Area
- The council was going to look into a Water Sprint Area for the Dive Crescent/Strand area (however, it was to coincide with the CBD/Waterfront development so perhaps it has been delayed)
- Papamoa East Surf Club
- Was being looked into. This was probably delayed with the slow down in new housing in 2009/2010. Perhaps it is due to be considered again now
- Information Hub
- “A central one-stop shop information hub for sport and active living information and advice” was proposed for Sport BOP to create (I found an “A-Z Sports Directory” on their website dated 2016, but I wouldn’t call that a hub)
- Destination Playground
- “Simpson Reserve, Papamoa identified as the site for this”
- In my notes for the 2006 Open Spaces strategy a ‘destination’ playground was mentioned for the Mount / Papamoa area. But this hasn’t been built yet
- Walking and Cycling
- “Cycling is perceived as “dangerous” in Tauranga. We need to provide easy accessible safe walking and cycling routes to further increase participation in these activities” Agreed!
